RICHMOND, Va – Word that a British exchange student went missing spread fast around VCU and the Richmond community. Now, weeks later, there are still no answers.
Jonny Dorey, a 22-year old geography student, was last seen March 2nd.
With only a thousand VCU students being international, few can identify with the culture shock. But, Andrew Shipley, senior Health and Physical Education major, can relate to Dorey.
Shipley left his hometown in England to come to VCU in 2007.
“It was pretty hard since I…first time I had actually really been away from my family, like all my family was in England and there’s me, I’m by myself, taking everything in,” said Shipley.

RICHMOND, Va.–The first annual VCU Southern Film Festival occurred at the Grace Street Theater on February 26th and 27th.
Six movies were shown over the two-day festival featuring films about African-American culture in the segregated “Old South.” Tabbed as “Screening Civil Rights,” the festival aired films with influential black stars like Spike Lee and Sidney Poitier.
Keynote speaker Dr. Emilie Raymond chose the films and wanted to illustrate the struggle of African-Americans in the south.
“Each film is either a film from the time or a film symbolic of an event or in memory of the time of the civil rights movement. We have a pretty good mix of films from during the movement and even today,” Raymond said.
The free festival was sponsored by the VCU Departments of English and History as well as the VCU Student Chapter of the NAACP.

For Rick Childers the VCU basketball season is more than just fun and games–it’s become a way of life.
Going to places as far away as Cancun, Reno and Oklahoma City, Childers is as much a part of VCU basketball as its mascot, Rodney the Ram. The 52-year-old state police lieutenant keeps a very watchful eye on comparing his work and game schedules.
“I usually get a schedule and I’m making notes and sending my boss e-mails saying I need this day, this day and this day,” Childers said.
For Childers, those days add up to what he calls “the streak.”
