RICHMOND, Va. — After two years of renovation and $47 million, the Cary St. Gym on the Virginia Commonwealth University campus is back in business.

At 125,000 square feet the new exercise and recreational complex is bigger than two football fields. It includes an indoor soccer field, an indoor track, four basketball courts, two racquetball courts, and a rock climbing wall.

“There’s so many different activities and things to do while you’re here,” Jenn DePuy, a VCU junior, said.

“It’s a different kind of work out, so we’re getting a lot of people who have never tried it before who get to come out and jump on the wall, you know, as a first time,” said Benjamin Moore, senior coordinator for the Outdoor Adventure Program.

The gym had a limited opening on Jan. 4, with regular hours beginning with the start of the spring 2010 semester on Jan. 19.

“If you haven’t come and seen us, check us out, we believe we have everything there is to offer. We have the best equipment, we have great staff, great facility,” Tom Diehl, VCU’s Director of Recreational Sports, said.
